Soccer Awards: Ballon d'Or or Bidone d'Oro?

The soccer world awaits in Zurich on the 10th January to crown the Ballon D'Or - a prize of a Golden Ball that is awarded to the best player in the world. A few weeks ago, Italy's infamous Bidone d'Oro (Golden Bin) was already given to one Adriano for being voted Serie A's worst player. Certainly not something to shout about.

But who are the candidates for the world player of the year?

As put by ESPN Soccernet's Phil Ball, it is no other than the three musketeers of Barcelona, Andres Iniesta, Leo Messi and Xavi Hernandez. We all know how tough it is to get this award - other than the fact that it is given to a single person from 7 billion of the world population, and the bragging rights to be called the best soccer player on the planet. OK, it is similar to getting a noble prize, but not everyone will get the 10 million dollar prize.

Xavi, Iniesta, Messi – world’s best ?
What struck me the most is how these guys had to endure the early years, and how much they have to work to get to where they are. It is by no means an easy feat. Messi at 13, once begged to return to Argentina with his mother due to the difficulty to adapt at the legendary La Masia School. Iniesta was said to spend most of his years in tears and refused to eat for the first 2 weeks he was there, and Xavi, though less stressful, caused some problems with his introverted nature and reluctance to talk things through. I simply cannot imagine if one of these guys decided to quit at some point, then we would probably not have the privilege to witness what is said to be the best team in the history of soccer.
So, what's it gonna be? the Ballon or the Bidone?
